Computer Distributions

World Computer Exchange (WCE) has been engaged in Puerto Rico since 2016 when 400 computers were shipped to San Juan. Several hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic curtailed further work and underscored the need for expanded support. In 2024, momentum saw a big uptick, with new partnerships and our sponsorship of multiple events benefiting young people on the island.
Refurbishment Event
In May of this year, we refurbished donated computers with the help of volunteers and our collaborators in Puerto Rico- the 20/22 Act Society, Putnam Bridge, Robert Nieves from the Computer Science Teachers Association, Ciudadela, and Code Group, a dynamic consulting group to a diverse range of industries specializing in navigating the complex landscape of state and federal regulations. Students and teachers visiting from Lutheran High School in San Antonio, Texas helped refurbish stored devices, sorting through years of donated inventory to prepare functioning computers for distribution. They identified 160 devices in good condition, while non-functional ones were sent to XSi for recycling. Code Group helped us connect with schools in need, extending their expertise in the Puerto Rican community.
Coding Bootcamps

At WCE, we’re committed to introducing individuals to tech skills to confidently enter the workforce. This summer, with support from the 20/22 Act Society, WCE hosted two coding bootcamps for youth, one at the Jane Stern Library in Dorado and another at the ACUTAS Community Center in Toa Baja. Led by technology professor María Del Mar Rodríguez from Terminal34, a total of 42 students participated in the two-week programs exploring coding, web design, and robotics through hands-on learning and interactive sessions.
Committed to measuring impact, WCE collected data before and after the classes. Results from the ACUTAS Bootcamp show that, at the Acutas Community Center,
- 87% of students had a positive experience
- 90% followed instructions with ease
- 87% expressed a desire to continue learning
At the Jane Stern Library,
- 93% enjoyed the classes
- 91% learned new skills
- 94% wanted to learn more.
In an interview with Camila Cora, WCE’s Puerto Rico Communications Intern, Mignelyz and Jamicha spoke of the program’s influence. Mignelyz shared that the boot camp was “extremely entertaining and educational,” sparking her interest in website creation and coding. Jamicha found the camp “filled with much learning,” appreciating the instructors’ support and recommending it to others interested in technology.
Refurbishing Clubs

WCE looks forward to continued engagement in Puerto Rico. We recently received a donation of 250 laptops in Puerto Rico from Digitunity.org. We are looking to begin some laptop refurbishing clubs at local high schools to prepare these laptops for distribution.
Partner with us! Be part of our efforts to offer more bootcamps, promote laptop refurbishing and reuse, and expand educational opportunities that bring tech knowledge and confidence to Puerto Rican youth.
