Digital Product Passports for Used Computers

World Computer Exchange uses a software platform that creates Digital Product Passports (DPPs) for donated computers, enhancing transparency for both donors and recipients.

Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are dynamically generated micro-websites that are created for each computer. They contain information about the computer, including its hardware specifications, hardware test results, and GPS location.

A device’s DPP is accessible by following a URL that is provided by WCE or simply scanning a QR code label on the computer.

In general, DPPs support the transition to a circular economy by providing information for reuse, repair, and recycling of products.

Not all donated computers receive DPPs. They are primarily used for mail-in donations and corporate pickups. They are also used for organizations that request certified refurbished computers.

DPPs give donors and recipients the following benefits:

  • Hardware Record: An online record of the computer’s hardware specifications, including the Make, Model, Serial Number, CPU, memory, and hard drive size.
  • Data Destruction Certificate: A certificate of data destruction which includes the hard drive’s serial number and the devices serial number. The certificate can be hashed and time stamped to the Ethereum blockchain.
  • Hardware Test Results: Includes battery, screen, CPU, and memory stress tests.
  • GPS Location: Tracks the device’s location on an online map, with coordinates that can be hashed and recorded on a blockchain for a permanent record.
  • Device Photos: Showcases the cosmetic condition of the device.
  • Digital Fingerprint: A unique hash of the serial number, make, and model, ensuring the device sent matches the device received and refurbished.
  • Additional Benefits: Warranty status, repair guides, material composition, hazardous materials list, CO2 savings, and compliance with European Union DPP standards.World Computer Exchange uses a software platform that creates Digital Product Passports (DPPs) for donated computers, enhancing transparency for both donors and recipients.
