Robots, Code, and Creativity: WCE Supported Bootcamp in Puerto Rico Ignites STEM Passion.

This summer, the Association of United Communities Taking Solid Action (ACUTAS) in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, became a vibrant hub of creativity, learning, and technological discovery, thanks to the support of the 20/22 Act Society Foundation and Terminal34 LLC, in partnership with World Computer Exchange. For four immersive weeks, students participated in a dynamic Coding and Robotics Bootcamp designed to introduce and deepen their understanding of STEM through hands-on, project-based learning.

The bootcamp kicked off with a two-week introductory course in block programming and robotics. Led by educators Nilsa Camarero and Francisco Nazario, students used EdBlocks and the Edison robot to explore coding fundamentals. They programmed robots to follow lines, respond to light, avoid obstacles, and even sumo-wrestle, all while building core skills in logic, sequencing, and problem-solving.

Following this successful start, the program transitioned into a more advanced two-week session using the UKIT Beginner and Intermediate kits by UBTECH Education. Students designed and engineered robotic animals, tools, and smart systems using sensors, motors, and block-based coding via the uKit EDU app. These challenges not only solidified their programming skills but also introduced key concepts in artificial intelligence, biomechanics, and automation.

The impact was clear: over 92% of participants reported full comprehension of the material, and 83% successfully built or programmed their robots. Most importantly, 78% said they had “a lot of fun,” highlighting the joy of discovery at the heart of STEM education.

Thanks to the generous support of the 20/22 Act Society Foundation, all participants received a STEM certificate of completion and a memorable summer experience that could shape their academic and professional futures.

As one student expressed in a heartfelt thank-you letter: “Thank you for giving us a month full of fun and learning… I hope you continue giving other boys and girls the opportunity to learn about these fascinating and fun topics like you did for us. For a better Puerto Rico!!!
