In 2024, Friends of Litein, a nonprofit supporting AIC Litein Hospital in rural Kenya, partnered with World Computer Exchange (WCE) to launch this initiative. The plan is to digitize the hospital’s outdated paper records through a modern Hospital Information Management System (HIMS).
With over 150 refurbished laptops provided by WCE, the hospital has begun implementing the system across outpatient and inpatient services, including the lab, pharmacy, imaging, HR, and accounting. The shift is already transforming patient care by streamlining records, improving efficiency, and preparing the hospital to process electronic insurance claims in the near future.
Progress and Ongoing Needs
Despite success, the project has faced challenges such as rising equipment costs, shipping logistics, and limited staff training. Thanks to local efforts, hospital workers are now taking typing classes and adapting to the new digital tools.
More Support is Needed
Friends of Litein is currently working to upgrade the hospital’s cabling, switches, and Wi-Fi, a critical step to fully support the digital infrastructure.
